Hatley Bog Garden

Hatley Castle Man-made Bog Garden

Adjoining the Japanese garden there is a lush bog garden whose plantings include gunnera, candelabra primulas, and rodgersias with its background of grasses and stands of bamboo. Here you will step over the moss-covered rill with its fish ladders that allowed the stocked trout to swim from the adjacent naturalistic pond to the upper pond in the Japanese garden where the owner fished from the teahouse.

Native flowering shrubs and herbaceous plants including red twig osier dogwood also surround a second pond. This pond is next to a meadow, which is a myriad of colour in the spring with its naturalized bulbs planted around a plane tree and small flowering cherry. You walk back up the hydrangea lined country lane past the walled garden to the Japanese garden realizing that once more there has been a blurring of the line as to where man starts and nature.
